ADM High Attendance Guide

We know that good attendance is important for success at high school. This is what we discovered after looking at last year's attendance and performance information at the end of the year.

GPA of all ADMHS students 2.82
GPA of students with 10-12 absences 2.44
GPA of students with 12.5-15.5 absences 2.03
GPA of students with 16 or more absences 1.75

We have also seen a correlation between attendance and performance on standardized tests and district assessments. Additionally, good attendance is one of the life skills that will help students be successful in the future education and in the job market.

The purpose of our attendance policy is not to punish students, but to encourage good attendance. You have the most influence on your child's behavior. But when parents and the school work together, we can have the maximum influence on student attendance. this guide is designed to answer some frequently asked questions about attendance at ADMHS. You will find more detailed information on p. 14-17 of the Student /Parent Handbook, or you can contact your child's counselor or the school office if you have additional questions.

Philosophy
Adel DeSoto Minburn High School is committed to the philosophy that every student should attend every class every day. Regular attendance and promptness are expected in all classes and are essential for success in school. Learning to participate in group discussions, developing on appreciation for the views and abilities of other students, and forming the habit of regular attendance are legitimate objectives of any course. Learning which is lost due to absence can never be adequately replaced. Since regular attendance is one of the greatest single factors contributing to successful schoolwork, the first obligation of a student is to attend school regularly.

Parents have the right to make the decision concerning school attendance for their children within the limits prescribed by the laws of our state. The school, however, has the responsibility of determing whether the reason for the absence presented by the parents/guardians is excused or unexcused. (Student/Parent Handbook, p.14)

FAQs Regarding Attendance

Q: What do I do if my child is sick?
A: Call school at 993-4584 before 10:00 a.m. You can always leave a message on the machine if you call before 7:30 a.m.

If you forget to call, please send a note within two days of the child's return to school.

If the child is attending a scheduled appointment, please bring a note from the doctor or other professional. The absence will not count against the total of ten per semester

Q: How long does my child have to make up work?
A: Two days for each day he/she is gone from school.

  • For absences over two consecutive days, the student can work out a schedule with the teachers
  • If the student will be gone for more that two days, you can call the office and get assignments sent home.
  • Work assigned before the student was absent is due when they return.
  • What should I do if we know in advance that my child will be gone?
  • Send a note to the office as soon as possible.
  • Use an Advanced Makeup Slip to gather assignments from teachers.
  • Turn in as much work as possible before leaving.

Q: What is the difference between an excused and unexcused absence?
A: Excused absences include illness, doctor or dentist appointments, family emergencies and attendance of school activities held during the day (see p.14-15 of the Student/Parent Handbook for a complete list.)

Unexcused absences include oversleeping, missing the bus, haircuts, concerts and car trouble (students are allowed one car trouble per semester without consequence). Students will make up double the time missed for an unexcused absence.

Q: How many days of school can my child miss?
A: Students are allowed to miss 10 days of school per semester. After that they will need to make up time minute for minute in order to get caught up with their work and missed class time. Absences due to appointments with doctors, dentists or other professionals (with a note from the professional), bereavement or family emergencies, or those related to school activities will not count toward the total of the 10.

After the third unexcused absence in a class during a semester, a student will be dropped from the class with an F, and assigned to a study hall without open campus.
